Proverbs Two: In Pursuit Of God's Treasure

March 2, 2018

What will you do throughout the day today?  I am sure that many of us have a long list of things that need to be done.  I met with someone this week who is so busy at work that even though he is working long days he is unable to keep up with the demand.  He is tired and wishes that he could feel like he was keeping us with things but as March begins he knows that there is still so much work from February that will still need to be addressed.

I sat down this morning and began reading Proverbs 2.  The first fifteen verses are all about being encouraged to seek after wisdom, understanding and insight.  In verses 4-6 we read these words, "If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.  For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright..."

When I read these words my mind considered the man who is seeking for silver.  I considered how hard a man would have to work to find silver.  It would be a hot, dirty and exhausting job.  And yet, what a thrill it would be to find the treasure.

I have never searched for silver or mined for gold; but I do know what it is like to look for something. Even now I have been unable to find my wallet since Sunday. I am sure that it will show up but there is a sense of panic in me till I find it. I keep wondering who might have it? What would they be doing with it? Is it time to tell my wife about it?

As a result of this, I know that part of my day will be devoted to finding that wallet. It is important to find it. Likewise, this Proverb is reminding me that my life ought to be characterized by the search for wisdom, understanding and insight. I ought to work hard at seeking the scriptures each day to find this treasure and to have it fill my mind, my affections and my heart with the things of God.

Yet, how many times do I find that the treasures of this world push out the time that I have to give to this search. It ought not to be this way. My wallet is important, so is the meetings I will have today. I need to devote a large part of my day to Sunday's sermon as well. But I ought not to neglect my personal pursuit of God through his Word so that I can grow in my relationship with the Lord and enjoy the fruit of these things that He has promised to give to me. I am so grateful for the Word of God. What a treasure!
