Texts: Deuteronomy 6:4-7; 4:9; Ezra 7:10; Matthew 28:19-20

Title: “Learn It, Live It, Pass It On”

Theme: We are responsible to pass on the faith.

Introduction: What responsibility do all adults have and parents have that makes them work, go to grocery stores and spend time preparing several times a day? Yes, eating. Most people eat at least two or three times a day plus snacks. Needless to say, people see the need to eat. They have hunger pains, headaches, weakness, etc. if they do not eat. Parents especially take the responsibility of feeding their children and wanting them to eat right. Our texts today reveal we also have a responsibility to feed our children the Word of God. Unrestrained sinful thoughts, words and deeds are symptoms of not feeding on the Word of God (Proverbs 29:18; Galatians 5:19-21). God’s word tells us we are to work just as hard to fulfill this responsibility as we work to feed our children food. Deuteronomy 6:4-7 reveals what needs to happen for us to fulfill the responsibility of feeding ourselves, our children and grandchildren the Word of God.

The Creator God instructs us to listen with the intent to do what is heard.

  • Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

  • שָׁמַע: (Shama) 1. Hear, 2. listen to 3. heed (a request) 4. hear > obey Ex 247; Gn 2218, be obedient (Holladay Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the OT)

  • John 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,

  • John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  • Mark 4:9 And he (Jesus) said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." (ἀκούω hear, listen to; of discipleship listen to, pay attention to, obey)

  • Matthew 15:10 And he called the people to him and said to them, "Hear and understand.”

  • Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Creator God instructs us to love Him with everything we have.

  • Deuteronomy 6:5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

  • 1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

  • Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, … (We have an inexhaustible supply)

  • 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. (We express love to God by obeying His commands)

The Creator God instructs us to hide His Word in our hearts.

  • Deuteronomy 6:6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (We need to systematically read all the Bible and obey it, practice it.)

  • Luke 11:28 But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!"

The Creator God tells us to teach His word to our children and grandchildren

  • Deuteronomy 6:7 You shall teach them diligently (“teach diligently” translates the Hebrew word, shanav: “repeat again and again” Holladay Hebrew Lexicon) to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

  • Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not your mother's teaching.

  • Deuteronomy 4:9 "Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children—See Deuteronomy 4:1-8 for the people saw and heard.

The Creator God knew we needed His help to obey Him and He gave His Spirit to each person who repents of his sin and believes the gospel.

  • Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (God promised to help us obey)

  • Ephesians 1:13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  • Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you, both to will (desire) and to work for his good pleasure. (We have God’s help to fulfill Deuteronomy 6:4-7)

  • Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Victory, Resource, Access, Motivation)

What we are to do with the scripture we have just heard

  • Get into a right relationship with God now by repenting of your sins and believing the gospel (Mark 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 10:9)

  • Begin expressing love to God by obeying His Word by faith 24/7.

  • Be systematically reading the Bible and holding yourself accountable to practice what it says by faith in the Son of God.

  • As a parent be diligently and daily teaching your children God’s word with even greater care than you feed them their daily food. Do it by faith in Jesus. Do it repeatedly, that’s how we learn.

  • As grandparents be diligently teaching your grandchildren God’s word as you have opportunity. Do it by faith in Jesus.

  • As adults in the Body of Christ use every opportunity to teach the next generation God’s Word. Do it by faith in Jesus.

  • Matthew 28:19-20 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." The children in a family are the number one responsibility of parents to make disciples, baptize in the name and teach all Jesus commanded the first disciples. Jesus will help each parent all the time.

  • Ezra 7:10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. (“Law” is translation of the Hebrew word “Torah” which means instruction, direction, law.) We are to learn God’s Word, live God’s Word, and pass it on to those in our sphere of responsibility.
