Proverbs 17:4 - A Key To Being Discerning

Proverbs 17:4 "An evildoer listens to wicked lips, and a liar gives ear to a mischievous tongue."

We live at a time when there are words being spoken from all angles. If ten people are placed in a room there would be just as many opinions on any given topic. Therefore, the need for a Christian to be discerning has never been more necessary than it is right now. The need to recognize truth should be of paramount importance to each of us. The Christians ability to be discerning rests upon the Word of God and the sanctification work of the Holy Spirit.

Proverbs 17:4 shows us the importance of living lives that reflect the Holy Spirit's workin our heart. In other words, to be discerning we must live consistent with what the Word of God teaches. If we waslk in sin, we will have a heart that is prone to love sin and obey it. If we walk in ways that are evil we will listen to wicked lips. If we lie we will be more inclined to listen to a mischievous tongue. Therefore, it is imperative that we walk blameless and do what is right. It is important that we speak the truth in our hearts. (Psalm 15:2; 51:6)
