Jesus' Words To Sardis

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. 4 Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before h

Jesus' Words To The Church In Pergamum

Over the last two weeks we have looked at Jesus’ words to the church in Ephesus and the church in Smyrna. Both competed with each other for status, recognition and honor. Ephesus and Smyrna were rich and successful because of trade routes. Today we are going to consider Jesus’ words to the church in Pergamum. Pergamum is not able to compete with Ephesus or Smyrna in regards to trade. However, Pergamum was important because it was the capital of Asia for over 400 years at the time of the writing of this letter to them. Some have described it in this way, “If Smyrna is compared to the city of New York, then Pergamum is to be likened to Washington DC.” William Barclay, in his commentary on Reve

Jesus' Words To Laodicea

Our Text this morning is found in Revelation 3:14-22, 14 “And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation. 15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and

Jesus' Words To The Church In Thyatira

18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unle

Luke 11:14-23 Jesus Conquers Over Spiritual Darkness

Recently, we looked at the seven churches in Revelation 2-3. Each church faced challenges within the churches and in the cities in which they lived. Each church faced a battles in the world in which Satan roams. When Jesus addressed these churches He typically disclosed four things to them. Jesus revealed Himself to them Jesus commended most of the churches for something good He had seen in them. Jesus address some sin that the church needed to repent of. Jesus then gives a promise to those who will hear, repent and respond in faith. Jesus calls these people ‘overcomers’. Jesus promises many things to those who overcome. For example, To the church in Ephesus, Jesus promises that the one who

Luke 12:1-3 Jesus Conquers In A Chaotic World

Last week we finished looking at the seven churches addressed in Revelation 2 and 3. All of these Christians were to hear His word, repent and remain faithful till the very end. W saw the importance of being disciples even in a chaotic environment. We see this chaos in us, in our community and even in the church. Ephesus was called to remember the love that they had at the beginning. Smyrna was told that they were to remain faithful even unto death. Pergamum was called to purity of teaching and to holiness in living. Thyatira was told to recover purity of doctrine, holiness in living and to hold fast till Jesus returns. Sardis, is to wake up, strengthen what remains, remember what they had r

Luke 13:1-9 Christ Conquers Behind The Scenes

We recently finished looking at the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3. Typically Jesus would speak to them in the following way: He would reveal something about Himself He would commend them for something good He would confront some sin to repent of He would give a promise to those who would overcome Three Observations: #1 Observation: Many of us may be prone to pay more attention to one of these points and to neglect some of the other points that Jesus made. For example, when Jesus reveals something about Himself to us we may get so caught up in the beauty of that that we neglect to hear the other encouragements, corrections and responses that we are to have. Some may be so focused upon

Hebrews 12:1-4 Looking To Jesus

Over the last few weeks we have looked to Jesus to help in our progress in our discipleship. In our first week we saw how Jesus responded in the midst of such great chaos. And we saw that in the midst of that chaos He preached to the people. This showed to us the importance of the word. Then we saw that Jesus was greater than all of the spiritual darkness that operate in this world. Jesus is much more powerful than the devil. Last week we saw that Jesus is working behind the scenes, and often unknown to us, so that we can respond to Him and bear much fruit. Today we are going simply be encouraged to always look to Jesus as disciples. As I sat and considered our text today, I saw my cat chasi
