David Had Learned To Draw Upon The Strength Of God

June 27, 2019

"I love you, O Lord, my strength.  The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliver, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."    Psalm 18:1-2

David's love for the Lord was closely connected to the strength that the Lord provided to him.   I will admit that these words catch my attention as I have discovered recently how little I truly depend upon the Lord and His graces.  But this is not true of David here.

If someone asked David why he loved the Lord he would immediately say, "I love the Lord my strength."   David was drawing from a deep well of grace and had become so aware of his dependence upon this grace. Daily he needed this grace.  Moment by moment he was drawing from the Lord this strength.

He took refuge in The Lord.  Listen to the next verse, " The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliver, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."   In other words, David is all in.  It's all or nothing.   His whole heart is sheltering in the Lord.  And a person such as this the Lord will save.

But what of a person who speaks of love but draws upon no grace?  In Psalm 18:40-41 we read these words, "You made my enemies turn their back's to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them."

Are you drawing upon the Lord such graces?   Do you have a profession but no dependence upon the Lord for daily grace?

Jesus warns of such things in Matthew 25.  There were 10 virgins.  Five kept oil in their lamps and five did not.  The five who did were taken in with the bridegroom and the five who did not were heard these words, "Truly, I say to you, I do not know you."

" May Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord." 2 Peter 1:2
