1 Kings 4:29-34 Solomon's Wisdom Draws Attention

Last year all of the elders of the church went on a twenty-four hour retreat together. We discussed many things over that time and then on the way home we stopped at a diner and had a meal. I sat there and I listened to these guys as they talked about so many different things. They talked about geography, hunting, education, religious topics, medicine, ministry, politics, fire codes, etc. I came home that evening and one of the first things that I told my wife was how I am always amazed that these guys know so much about so many things. In 1 Kings we are beginning to read about Solomon and his reign over the kingdom. In chapter three God comes to Solomon in a dream and asked Solomon to ask

PROVERBS 17:13

"If anyone returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house." Proverbs 17:13 "Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And David sought the face of the Lord. And the Lord said, 'There is blood-guilt on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death.'" 2 Samuel 21:1 As I read through 2 Samuel 22: 1- 14 several things stand out to me. One of the first thing we see is that the Lord used things such as extended famines to get His peoples attention. Long after Saul and Jonathan had been killed everyone in all of Israel had all but forgotten about the sin that had happened when Israel went back upon their promise to spare the Gibeonites

Proverbs 16:31-32

"Gray hair is crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city." Proverbs 16:31-32 In 2 Samuel 19 and 20 there is a fascinating story that relates to this proverb. In chapter nineteen king David, who had been forced into exile by his son Absalom, returns to Jerusalem after Joab had defeated David's enemies. Upon his return David is met by those who helped him in his exile and also by those who were opposed to him as he left Jerusalem. Through all of this David displayed great kindness to his friends and also great mercy to his enemies. Then near the end of this chapter all of the men of

Proverbs 14:33 Wisdom Makes Herself Known Among Fools

"Wisdom rests in the heart of a man of understanding, but it makes itself known even in the midst of fools." Proverbs 14:33 My devotional readings today was in 2 Samuel chapters 11-14. I have to tell you that my heart ached as I read these passages. I was thinking to myself, "What hope is there when such foolishness abounds in our hearts and in those around us?" In these chapters David commits adultery and murders Uriah. Then in chapter thirteen Amnon violates his half-sister at the encouragement of his servant. And then Absalom, Tamar's angry brother, has his servant kill Amnon and David grieves over all of this stuff. Why are we so quick to do foolish things? Why are we so quick to speak f
