Psalm 28:7-8 Be Their Shepherd And Carry Them Forever

The Lord is my strength of his people; He is the saving refuge of His anointed. Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their Shepherd and carry them forever. (Psalm 28:7-8) This morning I took great comfort in these words as I was praying. The Lord is indeed the strength of his people. Looking back over life I can appreciate the strength displayed by my dad. He was not a big man but he did have a strength about himself in virtually every area of his life. He was strong in character, strong emotionally, strong in discipline and in many other ways. He even displayed great strength during the final days of his life. But, like us all, my dad also had his weaknesses just as I do. And to

Psalm 28:1-2 To You I Turn And Lift Up My Hands

To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit. Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary. Psalm 28:1-2 Someone posed a question to me today. They asked how we could help people in our church look to the Lord and experience joy, peace and hope in the midst of the difficult situations that they are currently facing? I could really appreciate the question. David tells us in verse one that if the Lord will not hear his prayer that he would be like one of those who go down to the pit. I take this to mean that this was not only a life and de

Proverbs 12:18-19 Truthful Lips Endure Forever

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. (Proverbs 12:18-19) As I sit here reading these words today I am very mindful of the fact that two of my closest friends have received the sword thrusts of rash words from someone that they love in the last couple of days. They have had the words of someone close to them pierce them through. And in many ways these words have pierced their heart. So painful were these words that they took refuge in their home on Sunday unable to even find comfort in the fellowship with other believers. To be clear, they were not hurt by anyone i

Psalm 51: 8-12 - Let Me Hear Joy And Gladness

Where does one turn when they have sinned? Typically, when we sin, our first reaction is to run from God and to run from our Christian friends. We hide behind things when they come calling like Adam and Eve did in the garden. How did David overcome the great sense of guilt and shame that his sin had produced? How are we to find peace when we have sinned against God and hurt others? So far in this psalm we have seen David cry out for mercy. He does this because David knows of God's steadfast love; therefore, he seeks God's abundant mercy. We have seen David confess his sins and display the fact that he understands that the righteous judgment of God rests upon him because of his iniquity. Davi

Psalm 51:3-6 My Sin Is Ever Before Me

"For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me." Psalm 51:3 Inevitably as I am standing in line at the grocery store I find that the magazines at the cash registers catch my attention. The headlines over the years always seem to center on a lot of the same things. One of the themes that I have noticed over the years is that of a middle aged actor or actress who has finally come to terms with themselves. The headline is about how they are now living with the peace and self-identity that they never achieved when they were younger. We are being told that their past has been left behind and their new life is fulfilling and complete. Can time heal all hurts? Can we distance ourselves

Psalm 51:1-2 "A Sinners Bold Request"

"Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!" Psalm 51:1-2 I stood before a judge once and it did not go as well as I had hoped. Let me explain the story. One day I was at work and I received a call that I needed to go to a home and perform a service call. I quickly jumped into the work touch and drove to the home. On my way there I was pulled over by a police officer who noticed that the tags on the work truck were expired. But then he noticed that I did not have my glasses on either. I had inadvertently left them in my truck back at the job site. My h

Sermon: 1 Peter 1:22-25 The Word Produces A Genuine And Earnest Love

Good morning. Let me begin this morning by asking you a couple questions. First, what is the most valuable thing in your life? What is the greatest treasure that you possess? Now let me ask you to consider that one thing that you have admitted too and ask you if that really is your greatest treasure? What I mean is that if it is your greatest treasure, and if this thing is your most valued possession, then it will become evident by the attention it gets from you, the care you give to it, the time you invest into it, the devotion that you give to it? Peter is arguing in our text today, 1 Peter 1:22-25, that the greatest treasure that we have and the most valuable thing that we have access to

Proverbs Two: In Pursuit Of God's Treasure

What will you do throughout the day today? I am sure that many of us have a long list of things that need to be done. I met with someone this week who is so busy at work that even though he is working long days he is unable to keep up with the demand. He is tired and wishes that he could feel like he was keeping us with things but as March begins he knows that there is still so much work from February that will still need to be addressed. I sat down this morning and began reading Proverbs 2. The first fifteen verses are all about being encouraged to seek after wisdom, understanding and insight. In verses 4-6 we read these words, "If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidde
